The Good Guys Part 4

It's been a while since I've posted anything but this was too good to pass up.

Quite often when watching shows on ESPN, The NFL Network or The MLB Network there are stories about athletes who have done something wrong. Whether it be Dez Bryant walking off the field, the A-Rod saga or any number of other items that might be better suited for a Police Report than for the sports page.

So from time to time (although it hasn't been for a long time) I like to relay stories that celebrate the many athletes who use their fame and money to help others. Billy Cundiff and Spencer Lanning, the kicker and punter of the Cleveland Browns are two of many athletes who help others. For every FG that Cundiff kicks he will donate $200 to help fight Ovarian Cancer while Lanning will donate $100 for every punt that's inside the 20 for the same cause.

There are so many who do good, let us take time to celebrate them. For more info read the link below (that I hope will work). http://www.happinessisahotpierogi.com/2013/12/kicking-ovarian-cancer.html

The Good Guys Part 2

At the end of last year I wrote a post about some of the good things that some athletes have done. This was amid a lot of bad press for sports with athletes getting arrested and doing other unlawful things. In that post I mentioned some athletes and the good things they have done, and today I would like to write about a couple more.

Jalen Rose- Jalen Rose recently donated 1 million dollars to Dikembe Mutombo to help build a hospital in Africa.

Curt Schilling- Curt Schilling has helped raise funds to find a cure for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). If you would like more information about how to help you can check out Schilling's blog at www.38pitches.com.

I will hopefully post about the good guys in sports every once in a while, because these are the athletes that we should look up to. These are the men that our children should say that they want to be like, not only because they are famous athletes but because they are good people as well.

The Good Guys

Nowadays in Sports the "Bad Boy" image is alive and well. All you need to do is watch Sportscenter as they report about the 8th Cincinnati Bengal this season to be arrested/suspended for any number of things. Or listen to the radio as they talk about players named T.O., Ron Artest, Steven Jackson (of the Pacers not the Rams), Barry Bonds, or any player who went to "The U". Unfortunately because of these people all athletes get a bad name. Unfortunately The Sporting News only has their "Good Guys" issue once a year. So this post is in honor of the good guys.

Dikembe Mutombo - the 7 foot 4 Center has built hospitals and schools in Africa.

LaDainian Tomlinson - after breaking the single season record for touchdowns with three games left to go in the season L.T. stayed after the game to talk with underprivileged youth instead of going out with his teammates and celebrating his accomplishment.

Everson Walls - most people probably never heard of Everson Walls, the truth is that before I heard this story on Jim Rome's radio show I had never heard of him either. Everson Walls was a player for the Dallas Cowboys (back when they were America's Team...not America's Most Wanted). He recently gave one of his kidneys to Ron Springs (father of NFLer Shawn Springs) a former teammate of his. Everson Walls did not give of his time, he did not give of his money he gave of himself...literally.

There are many more athletes who have done good things, I would not want to leave anyone out and that is why I'm only mentioning 3 athletes. Let us celebrate and idolize these guys and people like them.
