Urban Meyer Discusses 2012 Signing Day Class

Today was National Signing Day and new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer procured the 6th best class (according to ESPN). Urban Meyer Introduces OSU Coaching Staff

Newly hired Ohio St. Football coach Urban Meyer unveiled his coaching staff during halftime of the Ohio St. vs. Indiana basketball game. Big cheers were heard for Luke Fickell, who coached the team this past season, and will remain on the team as the Defensive Coordinator.

This Day in Sports History - 1/3/2003

In the BCS Championship Game at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, Ohio State edges Miami of Florida, 31 - 24 in double overtime. The Buckeye victory ends Miami's 34-game winning streak and their hopes of a second straight National Title. The Hurricanes tie the score at 17 - 17 on a 40-yard field goal from Todd Sievers on the last play of regulation. TE Kellen Winslow II catches a seven yard TD pass from Ken Dorsey on 4th down in the first overtime for a 24 - 17 Miami lead. On the ensuing Ohio State possession, quarterback Craig Krenzel converts a 4th & 14 play, but faces another 4th down at the 5. The Hurricanes are called for a controversial pass interference penalty on the play, and three plays later Krenzel scores on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 24 - 24. In the second OT, running back Maurice Clarett crosses the goal like for Ohio State and Miami is stopped at the one yard line.

March Madness

Tomorrow starts the first games of the NCAA Tournament which ends on Monday April 2nd in Atlanta. There is no doubt in my mind that the winners of the tournament will be THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES. Of course you are probably thinking that I'm picking them because they are my favorite team, well that is true but I do have some facts to back me up.

• 8 Head Coaches have won the Championship before they turned 40. Ohio State Coach Thad Matta will turn 40 in July.


• Ohio State has a relatively easy bracket to get to the Final Four (on my brackets OSU is the only #1 seed that I have making the Final Four).


• Greg Oden (pictured below) is able to use his right hand again after he had surgery early in the year.

• Besides Oden, they have another great freshman named Mike Conley Jr. who can shoot, pass, and run the break.
• They also have guys like Jamar Butler, Ron Lewis, and Daequan Cook who were in the tournament last year when Ohio State lost, and they are looking forward to showing the country that Greg Oden is not the only player on the team.
• The most important reason why Ohio State will win is because April 2nd is the first night of Pesach and I will not be able to watch the game. When the football team played Miami for the National Title, a few years back, the game was on a Friday night, I couldn't watch the game so of course they win. This year when they played Florida the game was on a Monday night when I was able to watch and they lose. The fact is "I can't watch = winning National Championship".

Other thoughts as March Madness approaches:

• Texas F Kevin Durant reminds me of Marcus Camby. I know everyone is saying that Durant is better than Oden, and that he is the guy to build a team around, but every time I watch him play all I can think about is how they use to say the same things about Marcus Camby. He has had a nice career but Duncan has won.
• Georgetown C Roy Hibbert is another one in the long line of great Georgetown Centers, which include Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning.
• Memphis, a #2 seed, has only beaten one team in the top 25 when they beat Kentucky on November 22nd, by the score of 80 - 63.
• Tyler Hansborough of UNC is wearing a protective mask because of the shot to the face that he endured from Duke's Gerald Green. He may start getting used to playing with the mask on by the Final Four...but don't be surprised if they don't make it that far. UNC has a very tough road to the Final Four, having to get passed Michigan St. If Drew Neitzel is on then UNC will be going home. In the next round they would have to face Texas and Kevin Durant. If they can make it past them they would face Georgetown, and Roy Hibbert will overpower Hansborough.
• And finally Davidson freshman G Stephen Curry could do some damage in this tournament. His father was long time NBA sharp-shooter Dell Curry, and the apple does not fall far from the tree.

My Top Ten Favorite Ohio State Buckeyes Players

With Monday January 8th being the BCS National Championship Game, I decided to make a list of my top ten favorite Buckeyes. Some of them went on to have great NFL careers, while others were only good in their college days. Ohio State has a rich history and it is thanks to Head Coaches named Hayes,Cooper and Tressel even if some of them were never able to beat the Wolverines from Michigan. Well here goes the countdown:

10. Antoine Winfield-CB: Was a solid defensive back with Nate Clements and Ahmed Plummer.

9. Andy Katzenmoyer-LB: "The Big Kat" never panned out in the NFL but was one of a long line of great Ohio State Linebackers.

8. Joey Galloway & Terry Glenn-WR: These speedsters did wonderful in college, especially if you consider that they didn't have such good Quarterbacks throwing the ball to them.

7. Nick Mangold-C: The anchor of the Buckeyes' O-line is now anchoring for the New York Jets.

6. Pepper Johnson-LB: The NY Giants got Pepper in the 2nd round of the 1986 draft. He won Super Bowls with the Giants and was a major reason why the Cleveland Browns made the playoffs in 1994.

5. Robert Smith-RB: His NFL career was cut short due to injury but was a good player and a great teammate.

4. Troy Smith-QB: With his 3-o record against Michigan and a Heisman Trophy to his credit, all he needs is a win Monday Night against Florida, and he'll be moving up this list.

3. Eddie George-RB: Another one of Ohio State's Heisman winners, had a great pro career with the Oilers/Titans.

2. Chris Spielman-LB: Spielman was recently on the Mike & Mike radio show and said, "if not for Ohio players Michigan would be Iowa." 'nuff said.

1. A.J. Hawk-LB: The team's defensive leader, has passed the torch on to James Laurinaitis as the next great OSU linebacker.

Other players receiving votes: Lou Groza; Tom Tupa; Bobby Carpenter; Orlando Pace; Keith Byars; Jeff Davidson; Mike Vrabel; David Boston; Shawn Springs; Archie Griffin; Mike Nugent.

This Date in Sports History

On December 29th 1978, Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes blows up in the closing stages of the Gator Bowl with the Buckeyes losing to Clemson 17-15. When Clemson linebacker Charlie Bauman intercepts an Ohio State pass and runs into the sideline area, Hayes sets off a brief bench-emptying scuffle. The next day, the 65 year old OSU mentor will be fired after 28 years with the team, a 205-61-10 record and 5 national titles.

BCS National Championship Game

On January 8th the Ohio State Buckeyes will be going up against the Florida Gators. Here are a few of my thoughts on this games. Both teams have explosive offenses, both have good young defenses, both have excellent coaches. For Ohio State this will be the 3rd time this season they will be playing the #2 team in College Football (the other two being Texas and Michigan). Also Ohio State needs to run the ball effectively because Florida has a few of their D-linemen imjured, so the more Ohio State can run the more time Florida's defense will be on the field and they'll be very tired. When Florida has the ball Ohio State needs to remember 2 things, if you get pressure on Chris Leak he'll make mistakes, also when freshman QB Tim Tebow comes on the field he runs to the left, never to the right always to the left.

Mr. Big Game a.k.a. Troy Smith will have to lead his team if they want to win this game, it can definitely be done but it will be difficult.

Go Buckeyes!!!

OSU-Michigan

It's laughable to think that that Michigan actually has a chance to be playing in the National Championship. In their recent game, which Ohio State won by three points, Ohio State had 3 turnovers, none of which were forced by Michigan. So Ohio State was a -3 in the turnover battle, and they still won!!! Michigan would have been destroyed if Doug Datish would not have snapped the ball properly.

Ohio State should be playing the winner of the USC/Notre Dame game. I'm personally just a little upset that Rutgers lost this past weekend, I would have loved to see Ohio State play Rutgers.
