This Day in Sports History - 1/21/2004

The Minnesota Wild set an NHL record by scoring two goals three seconds apart during a 4 - 2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The previous record is five seconds, shared by four teams. With 15.5 seconds remaining, C Jim Dowd puts in a long rebound of his own slapshot to break a 2 - 2 deadlock. Three seconds later, RW Richard Park takes the puck off the faceoff and flicks it into the empty net. The defeat is part of a 19-game franchise record winless streak for the Blackhawks away from home, in which the club dropped 18 in regulation and one in overtime.

This Day in Sports History - 5/10/1970

Defenseman Bobby Orr scores 40 seconds into sudden death overtime to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues at the Boston Garden to complete a four-game sweep in the Stanley Cup Finals. After scoring the goal, Orr raises his arms in triumph and is accidentally tripped by St. Louis defenseman Noel Picard. Orr, almost horizontal to the ice, appears to fly through the air. It is the first Stanley Cup championship for the Bruins since 1941. One of six expansion teams that began play during the 1967-68 season, the Blues reached the finals in each of their three seasons only to be swept on each occasion. St. Louis lost to the Montreal Canadiens in both 1968 & 1969.

This Day in Sports History - 4/9/2002

Center and team captain Saku Koivu of the Canadiens receives an eight-minute standing ovation from Montreal fans at the Molson Centre before a game against the Ottawa Senators as he returns to the ice for the first time since being sidelined with abdominal cancer at the age of 27. Koivu was declared cancer-free in February 2002. Montreal wins, 4-3, to clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 1998. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, Montreal will knock off the top-seeded Boston Bruins in six games before losing in the next round to the Carolina Hurricanes. A native of Finland, Koivu is dealt another serious setback in 2006 when struck in the eye by the stick of Justin Williams of the Hurricanes. Koivu suffers a detached retina, but returns to play despite reduced peripheral vision.

This Day in Sports History - 2/24/1982

Wayne Gretzky sets a new NHL season goal-scoring record during a 6 - 3 Oilers victory over the Sabres in Buffalo. Gretzky came into the contest with 76 goals on the season, tied with Phil Esposito's 76 for the Boston Bruins in 1970-71. He gets his 77th with the score 3 - 3 at 13:24 of the third period on an unassisted goal past Buffalo netminder Don Edwards. Before the night is done, he adds two more goals, at 18:16 and 19:43, as Esposito stands by to hand him the game puck.

This Day in Sports History - 1/9/2004

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Brian Boucher breaks a 55-year-old NHL record when he stifles the Minnesota Wild, 2 - 0, for his fifth-straight shutout. He also sets a modern league record for consecutive scoreless minutes by a goaltender with 332 minutes and 1 second. His shutout streak will end when the Atlanta Thrashers tie the Coyotes 1 - 1, on January 11.
