This Day in Sports History - 1/2/1982
The Chargers outlast the Dolphins, 41 - 38, in overtime at the Orange Bowl in one of the most exciting NFL postseason games ever played. At the end of the 1st quarter, San Diego has a 24 - 0 lead, when Miami coach Don Shula replaces starting quarterback David Woodley with Don Strock. The Dolphins roar back and take a 38 - 31 lead on the first play of the 4th quarter. Runningback Tony Nathan scores 2 TDs during the comeback, one on a 40-yard hook-and-lateral play. The Chargers tie the score 38 - 38 with 58 seconds left in regulation on a 9-yard pass from Dan Fouts to James Brooks. The game ends after two missed Miami field goals in 13 minutes and 52 seconds of OT on a 29-yard field goal by the Chargers.

Heath Bell
Closer Heath Bell signed with the Florida...um...Miami Marlins on a 3 year $27 million deal with an option for 2015. He took over as Closer of the Padres after they severed ties with future HOFer Trevor Hoffman. He has 134 career saves and his save percentage is 83.7%. From 2009 - 2011 Bell was top 5 in the NL in Saves and in 2007 & 2008 was top 5 in the NL in Holds. The Marlins have built a new stadium and it has allowed them to go out and spend some money.Related Posts:

This Day in Sports History - 11/22/1981
Kellen Winslow, tight end for the San Diego Chargers, ties an NFL record with five touchdown receptions during a 55 - 21 trouncing of the Raiders in Oakland. Before the end of the first half, Winslow scores twice on passes of 15 and 29 yards from Dan Fouts. Fouts adds three TD passes in the third quarter, two to Winslow and one to Charlie Joiner. In the fourth quarter, Winslow caps his spectacular day by scoring on a three yard option pass from running back Chuck Muncie.

Andy Pettitte & Trevor Hoffman
The final two players on my 25 Free Agents to watch are Andy Pettitte and Trevor Hoffman. Both players decided to retire instead of returning for another season. Pettitte has a career record of 240 - 138 and 2,251 strikeouts. He also has the most postseason wins with 19. Hoffman, who started as a SS in the Minor-Leagues, had 601 career saves. Included in that were nine seasons of 40 or more saves. Hoffman is known for his change-up like Bruce Sutter is known for his splitter or Mariano Rivera is known for his cutter.

Orlando Hudson
The San Diego Padres signed Orlando Hudson to a two year deal. Hudson will play 2B and bring some veteran leadership to a young team. Hudson is a 2 time All-Star and has won 4 Gold Gloves. He is part of a new up-the-middle duo with recently acquired SS Jason Bartlett. This is Hudson's 4th team in as many years and has helped lead the Dodgers and Twins into the post-season in 2009 & 2010 respectively.Related Posts:

Aaron Harang
Starting Pitcher Aaron Harang signed a 1 year deal with the San Diego Padres. Harang is a San Diego native and although he had a difficult season with the Reds he has pitched well in PETCO Park (which is considered a "pitchers park"). Harang missed two months during the season due to lower lumber spasms, so that's something to look out for.Related Posts:
